Walking the best of Kentish Town.

Ideally refer to  a copy of “Streets of Kentish Town” published by Camden History Society available at Owl Bookshop.

 This is only a rough street itinerary.  Words in capitals worth researching by Google or above publication.

Start at Kentish Town Underground/Thameslink Station.

R. out of station pass THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE pub and turn R. into Leighton Road then  L.  in LEVERTON STREET.  Walk pass THE PINEAPPLE pub and COUNTESS ROAD.  At the top end of street note Parish Church of ST. BENETS to the right but before the top turn L. into  RAILEY MEWS.  Note cobbled street and conversion of stables/garages into new homes.

At the end of the street turn R back into LEVERTON STREET, and then R. into colourful  FALKLAND ROAD.  Walk down a short distance and look for FALKLAND PLACE on the L.   Walk past old cottages and play area.  Then R. and then L. back to KENTISH TOWN HIGH STREET.   Observe interesting  collection of shops.  Cross over road and look for  McDonalds and HOLMES ROAD.   Going into Holmes Road walk past POLICE STATION  and L. into RAGLAN STREET.  Note row of cottages on one side and 1960s  MONMOUTH ESTATE opposite.

Find alleyway on R.Hand corner and note BOLLARD at entrance.    Turn L at end into INKERMAN ROAD and into street area with other names from the CRIMEA WAR.   ALMA,, CATHCART, WILLIS AND GRAFTON.   At end of Inkerman turn L past MAP CAFE  and note BARTLETTS GLASS on opposite corner.  Walk down GRAFTON ROAD to ornate KENTISH TOWN SPORTS CENTRE and if it is open, look inside viewing area and note old pictures of how the Baths looked in the 1920s when it was built.

Cross over PRINCE OF WALES ROAD, looking back towards the High St, note conversation of Polytechnic of North London into residential flats,  and HOPE CHAPEL next door.

Walk down CASTLEHAVEN ROAD for a short distance, look back at facade of Sports Centre, before turning L. into KELLY STREET.  Walk down this Grade 2 listed street with colourful houses and reinstated ironwork,  back into KENTISH TOWN HIGH STREET.  Cross over this to  ST.ANDREW AND BARNABAS CATHEDRAL Greek Orthodox Church.   If it is open carefully look inside at the incredible internal decoration.

On the far end of this church, walk L. into ROCHESTER PLACE (not Road) and again note old properties converted into residential/small businesses.  Half way down,  turn R. into REEDS  PLACE with small cottages and interesting front gardens.  At the end note DOTS MUSIC SHOP with its piano frontage.

Turn R. into ROYAL COLLEGE STREET  past  school converted into residential dwellings and enter KENTISH  TOWN HIGH STREET   again.  Opposite is a newly converted property which was originally THE CASTLE INN.  Walk up the High Street passing KELLY STREET and PRINCE OF WALES ROAD on the Left  and turn L into  ANGLERS LANE..  Note, on the corner of Raglan St, the RAGLAN STREET DAY CENTRE also being converted into private residential accommodation.  Pass by another conversion of flats from what was CLAUDIUS ASH FALSE TEETH FACTORY and come back to the INKERMANS AREA RESIDENTS ASSOC. Area.
