December update

Potentially alarming developments re evening and night time economy strategy

We previously alerted you to the consultation on Camden’s evening and night time economy strategy, and pointed out that it is heavily weighted in favour of commerce rather than residents (note the word “economy” in the heading). i.e. it may well favour extended licensing hours into the late night and early morning.  We’ve now received this:

“Expressions of interest are now open for the Citizens’ Assembly for Camden’s Evening and Night Time Economy Strategy

Please click here for more information and to register your interest. Registrations will close Monday 16 January 2023.

If you need a hard copy version of form, please email to request a copy.

If you are d/Deaf or hard of hearing, you can text or WhatsApp 0791 7435 791 for further details. If you are Blind or have other sight loss, you can call 0791 7435 791 for further details.

About the Citizens’ Assembly

The Citizens’ Assembly will be held on Saturday 18 February 2023, Saturday 25 February 2023 and Saturday 4 March 2023. It will develop a vision for the future of Camden’s evening and night time and make recommendations about how the Council, businesses and Camden’s communities could achieve this vision. To thank participants for taking part in all 3 days of the Assembly, we are offering a gift of thanks, either as cash or a voucher, worth £250.

Other ways to have your say

Everybody is welcome to share their views and ideas on the Commonplace site for Camden’s Evening and Night Time. The Commonplace surveys are open until Friday 20 January 2023.

If you have any other questions, please email or call, text or WhatsApp us on 0791 7435 791”

If, like us, you have concerns about issues like the extension of licensing hours and the number of venues, then please get involved by responding to the consultation and copy us in.

Obviously relevant to this is ….

Two green developments locally:

1. Sustainiara

This is a new IARA WhatsApp subgroup to implement and share knowledge of Climate mitigation and resilience, Sustainable and Regenerative action in the Inkerman Area.

For example:

– Climate / carbon / energy /PV

– Travel / Car pool / shared bikes, cars and other vehicles / EV charging

– Public realm / Parklets / seating

– Recycling / Reuse / exchange

– Buildings / insulation / retrofit / grants

– Shopping locally / eco-deliveries

– Biodiversity

Meeting every 2nd Wed of every other month.

We are starting with a survey of all our homes to identify what people have already done in terms of insulation improvement, solar panels and heat pumps.

So far there are 12 participants. We will post news of any major developments on the main WhatsApp group (now with 164 participants)

2. This is separate but obviously related to the existing Trees and Gardens IARA WhatsApp subgroup (23 participants) which started as a way of making sure new street trees survived by watering them during the drought in the summer.  We have expanded that to include a focus on gardens, both private and the ones under the trees and window boxes etc.

There has been mention of ideas such as offering each other advice, extra plants that we may have, seeds, the shared use of tools, buying compost etc in larger quantities than each of us might need and so on.

We might extend it to visiting each other’s gardens or examining each other’s window-boxes and getting advice from experts – like Dilip – about trees and gardening.

As a modest starter example, last year one of us supplied some small hollyhock seedlings to a number of people and we now have a collection of seeds, colour-coded.  There is also a question about planting an apple tree.

Even more ambitiously, maybe we could explore linking with local resources like the parks and the Heath?

We could also discuss whether that might extend to a more general embracing of nature issues such as ornithology or interest in wildlife.

Both the above groups will be reflected on the website at:

On the subject of WhatsApp groups – we now have a Dogs Group (17 participants) and a Theatre-goers one (30) to add to the previous ones which included Local History (27).  Email us with your address and phone number to be joined to these.

Local Planning Policy

Below is a link to the latest planning update from Camden Council.  It includes a consultation on the Local Community Infrastructure Levy (Local CIL) – which ends 19th Dec 2022. At a recent meeting of our new SustainIARA subgroup it was suggested that IARA could apply for some CIL money to help with local environmental issues – such as enabling surveys of homes to improve insulation. If you have views on this please let us know very soon.

And on that subject – if you need a warm space this winter to work, meet friends, take children, here is the link for Camden

And for general help with the cost of living crisis

Annual General Meeting of IARA

We usually have the AGM around Christmas time, and make it a bit of a party at The Grafton.  However, that gets very booked up (and expensive to hire) in December, so this year we plan to hold it in late January.  We should have a firm date soon, and will let you know in the next email.
