Camden Officers ignore local opinion and recommend approval of the hotel / hostel corner of Holmes Rd and the High St. Plus St Patrick’s calls for new pupils.

Dear Members.

  1.  Application for a hotel or hostel of 42 beds above McDonalds. We circulated the notice of this application and received unanimous views opposing it from members.

If you go to the link to the application here:  https://camdocs.camden.gov.uk/CMWebDrawer/PlanRec?q=recContainer:%222024/4116/P%22   You will see the cogent objections, especially the second one from Gerald and Joyce who live opposite, and the ones at the bottom of the list from IARA which quotes Alma Street residents Jenny, and Jane and James .

Most make the point that this is an absurd place for a hotel / hostel.  The wholly impractical entrance arrangements for guests with suitcases will be across the narrow, crowded pavement of Holmes Road, on a yellow line in this busy, narrow street which is close to the quite dangerous junction with the High Street.   Holmes Road is a Safer Schools Street because traffic is dangerous for school children and families, so access will not be possible during many school hours.

We understand that many of 74 rooms at the hotel will be ‘micro’ and windowless – features that suggest something more ‘hostel’ in nature than ‘hotel’, and likely therefore to attract large groups and young people who are likely to be returning late and potentially noisily in the evenings.  We already have such problems with the Stay Club further down Holmes Road.

For unknown reasons the officers have recommended approval of the application.   We may see their reasons when their report is available, just eight days before the meeting – ie the coming Wednesday for the meeting on 3 April. At which point we have almost no time to respond or seek to address the committee.

In terms of what people can do – and we will do – please see the attached letter to us and the passage that says: “You must submit your written submission or deputation request to arrive no later than 9am on the day before the meeting. It should be no more than 2 pages long and you can send it by email or letter. The contact details are shown below. Email: planningcommittee@camden.gov.uk “

  1.  St. Patrick’s Primary School is our local primary school. We understand that although it’s a Catholic school it is very inclusive, with children from many different faith backgrounds and none.

They have asked us to include this, to let the neighbourhood know that they currently have vacancies.

“St. Patrick’s Catholic Primary School is Outstanding for pupils’ personal development and leadership and management.

Ofsted report, “Pupils at St. Patrick’s benefit from a nurturing and inclusive environment where they feel safe, happy and valued. Pupils flourish because they are supported socially and emotionally. Pupils work hard and show enthusiasm for their learning.”

We currently have pupil vacancies and nursery vacancies. Tell all your friends to visit us!

St. Patrick’s Primary School is in the heart Kentish Town. A nurturing and ambitious school, with great pupil outcomes and great pupil behaviour.
